RESIDUE ON IGNITION

The ash content of a drug is the inorganic residue remaining after incineration, which is converted to the sulphated form.
The substance is ignited with concentrated sulphuric acid which decomposes and oxidises organic matter, leaving a residue of inorganic sulphates.
